The party set off from Fifth Avenue, Denneoord (George) at the civilized hour of 8.30am. After crossing through the enchanting section of indigenous forest, the route follows a well-used footpath alongside the Power Train railway line. A steady climb led to “fly corner”.

The cloudless blue sky sets off George Peak in the distance. From here the route traversed at a leisurely pace westwards along a panoramic route overlooking the city of George.

This zone is well into the fynbos above the belt of wattle infestation skirting the city. After observing the ever-changing scape of wild flowers, we enter “Tonnelbos”.

Also known by the aptly picturesque name of “fern forest”, this is a magical old forest which abounds with ferns, streams, moss and giant indigenous trees.

Emerging from the forest, the route descends back to the starting point, whereupon we were all “safely off mountain”.
