This hike starts at the usual trail head for the Doringrivier Circuit in Waboomskraal. From there, one gets a tantalising view looking due south onto the southern ridge of the Outeniquas. As one heads up the jeep track through the farmland towards the nature reserve, Mnr Kapp dominates the aspect. This peak was today’s goal.

The party was small, comprising Henrietta Mey and Christo Engels (temporary members), Janine Smith and Tony Bowen (meet leader, taking the photo).

The weather forecast was not great: a peak enveloped in thick cloud until 11 a.m. On arrival at the starting point, this forecast looked accurate. We nevertheless decided to press on.

After entering the reserve, one turns sharp left and from there it’s all off-path. The Leucadendrons and Restios had been enjoying the season’s unusual amount of rain, and the party had to penetrate shoulder high bush while negotiating the rock bands.

With no sign of the clouds dissipating, we pushed on upwards, finding safe ledges between the cliffs.

But true to forecast, the cloud cover cleared as we reach the ridge line, charmingly named Teewatersberg.

Looking westward along Teewatersberg. This was the route of a recent MCSA hike, which came along the ridge moving eastwards to this spot. In the distance, Skurweberg and Engelseberg can be seen.

Now looking eastwards, the route ascends a steep rocky and bushed line.

The rock formations are inspiring, as are the views of Mossel Bay in the distance.

Perhaps this is the original Kapp se Baken?

The official summit is some distance further on. In the distance both Vensterberg and Cradock Peak can be spotted.

After enjoying lunch on the peak, the party returned home in reverse.

Thanks to those who joined this lovely hike.
