On Saturday, the 2nd December 2023 the South Cape Section held their annual Christmas function. This time it was slightly different as we chose to camp and braai at Swartvlei Campsite. The weather looked a little uncertain a few days ahead of time, but when the day arrived in was a mild, pleasant day. 17 Campers arrived with various trailers, camping vehicles and little tents. One even ventured to sleep under the stars with no cover. One of our campers arrived with fishing rods in his canoe (trailing a second canoe). I don’t believe much canoeing or fishing actually took place.

As the afternoon progressed 21 day-visitors arrived donning their bling and the campers quickly put on their smart clothes and bling (or not). The hall was decked in bling and tables and chairs put out around the braai. Werner Frei as usual had the braais ready for action with perfect timing. The Ladybergers, technical and braai helpers, as well as our chair and secretary; were duly thanked for their efforts this year. The best dressed blingers were Maretha Alant and Santie de Villiers, both also receiving a small prize. After a delicious meal with a great variety of salads and desserts, the entertainment started and Andre du Plessis arranged a wonderful sing-along (with song books – which we couldn’t read without our glasses).

The evening came to a slightly abrupt halt with day visitors leaving around 8pm. A few campers settled around a campfire for another hour or so of singing and chatting. The next morning greeted us with a short shower of rain, sending our brave starlight camper to the ablution building for cover. As the morning arrived, people went off for walks on the beach or started packing up their bits and pieces, heading for home. A great closing to a year of hiking and socializing.

Wishing everyone a peaceful festive season!
