A forecast temperature of 28 C was perfect for a route largely under cover of the forest canopy and offering a lunchtime dip. A small and select party entered through the gate and onto the path, almost immediately having to deviate around a fallen tree. Despite the recent rain there seemed to be fewer fungi visible, and the usual crop of spider webs was much diminished. No game was seen, but there was ample evidence of bushpigs. The path showed no indication of any maintenance since the onset of the pandemic, but with some hacking, sawing, yanking and dragging (a full-body workout, this route) it proved feasible to follow the route.

The burnt out plantation area has been transformed by the rapid growth of keurbooms and some less favoured species, making route-finding to the pool slightly tricky. The river water proved to be still under the influence of winter, with a solitary swimmer immersing themselves to wash off the trail grime. The return journey picked up the jeep track to avoid the overgrown sections encountered on the way out.
An enjoyable excursion with good company – thanks to Werner and Sandy!
