This hike was planned by Derek Odendaal, who unfortunately due to injury had to withdraw. Clifton Donald stepped in as meet leader and 9 of us set out for Thomas Hut, our base for two nights.

Blessed with lovely weather, after a 3 hr 7Km walk, we arrived at the spectacular Thomas Hut. This was luxury indeed, although somewhat cramped. Some fun was had that night chasing the hut’s resident rodent, so food had to be kept out of harm’s way.
At 1989m, Fonteintjiesberg is one of the range’s highest peaks and this was our goal. Next morning we set off on the 4.2km trek to this peak, aided by cairns and for much of the way a footpath. After an initial tough uphill stretch, the going eased and we before we knew it we could look down on the clouds below us. It was a wonderful clear day.
Along the way we even encountered snow and the free spirited took the time to have a snowball fight.
All too soon we summited and the drop-off the other side was not for the feint-hearted.
Then it was back to the hut and a swim, for most of the group. However Gillian, Amelia and Hugh set off for Brandberg peak, (1800m), which was duly bagged, after a somewhat challenging climb in rather hot weather.
After Fonteinjiesberg, Bruce was just getting warmed up and took off for heaven knows where to get in a bit more mileage. Everyone else just chilled in their own way.
Sunday evening saw the temperature drop and clouds build up. We had some light rain, fortunately at night. The next morning the air was crisp and just perfect for our descent back to our cars. We all arrived safe and sound with our spirits refreshed. Thank you, Mother Nature!
